About 50-km south of Taunggyi, along the
highly scenic road , passing through
colorful farms of garlic, onion, potatoes,
mustard, cabbage, taro, and sesame, there
lies Kakku, the jewel of Pa O tribe where
over 2000 of 16th century pagoda ruins in
one small area like Amazon forest of
pagodas. The stupas are decorated with
stucco figures like mythical animals,
celestial beings, and floral patterns. Some
of the monuments are well-preserved while
some have overgrown with trees and shrubs,
adding more intriguing accent. Since the
pagoda complex is located deep inside the Pa
O territory, it is required to take an
escort through PNO office in Taunggyi. Kakku
is best visited as a day excursion from Inle
Lake or from Kalaw to Kakku via Taunggyi
then overnight in Inle Lake. |
