Landline
International calls can be made from
most of the hotels, but calls are very
expensive, starting from 7USD a minute
to Europe. It is necessary to ask the
price and call conditions beforehand in
order to avoid unpleasant surprises.
Although it is quite easy to make
International Direct Dial (IDD) calls
from Rangoon, it might be more difficult
from certain areas such as Inle Lake,
Pindaya or Puta O where you might need
to make your call through an operator.
Receiving a call from abroad is very
difficult in Yangon and almost
impossible from another area of Myanmar.
Mobile phones
Myanmar is now installed with GSM and
CDMA telecommunication networks covering
major cities and some remote towns. It
is now possible to bring your mobile
phone into Myanmar without needing to
answer fussy questions at airport custom
desk, but we are regret to inform you
that your mobile phone will not be
entirely compatible with the system
using in Myanmar until 2010.
Computers & Digital Equipments
It is possible to bring your laptop /
palmtop computers, iPods, or GPS
Navigators into Myanmar. Some cyber
cafés and hotels have ADSL broadband
wired or wireless access. Most of the
branded computer and digital camera
accessories can be purchased in Yangon.
Internet
Cyber Cafes / Public Access Centers
(PACs) are now widely available in most
of the big cities in Myanmar (Yangon,
Bagan, Mandalay, Bago, Moulmein, Nyaung
Shwe, Hpa An), making you an easy
browsing on the go.
Although the internet service in Myanmar
is heavily censored, you can still surf
freely to most of non-politic websites,
wikis, blogs, and chat-rooms etc. but
not to the popular web mails like yahoo,
Gmail, hotmail, GMX, and AOL etc. Some
cyber cafés could help you to access
these webmail by tunneling but it is not
always easy. In some places, it is
possible to call using IP telephony
services through gtalk, skype,
mediaringtalk etc.
